Private Ijen Crater - Blue Fire Tour from Bali

2 Day 1 Night

Tour Description

Ijen plateau, also known as Ijen Crater (Kawah Ijen), is highly recommended for nature enthusiasts and hikers. The plateau was once a huge active crater, 134 sq km in area. Ijen is a quiet but active volcano, and the landscape is dominated by the volcanic cones of Ijen (2,368 asl) and Merapi (2,800 asl) on the northeastern edge of the plateau, and Raung (3,332 asl) on the southwestern corner.

The Ijen volcano complex is a group of composite volcanoes located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency of East Java, Indonesia. It is known for its blue fire, acidic crater lake, and labor-intensive sulfur mining.

The beauty of Ijen Crater has been recognized worldwide. In March 2016, this magical lake was included in UNESCO's World Biosphere Reserves. Upon arrival, after walking through a road surrounded by lush greenery, a refreshing chill breeze will greet you.

You will have the chance to observe the most famous natural phenomenon of blue fire. There are only two in the world. Ijen is the largest blue flame area; the other is in Dallol, Ethiopia.

The blue fire is ignited sulfuric gas, which emerges from cracks at temperatures up to 600°C (1,112°F). The flames can be up to five meters (16 feet) high; some of the gas condenses to liquid and remains ignited.

During the day, the mesmerizing sight of sunlight radiating on the turquoise lake enveloped with smoke will leave a lasting impression. Several small vents can be found surrounding the crater, providing a source of work for sulfur miners. These workers go down into the crater and climb back up, passing a dangerous path on the edge of Ijen Crater with a load of up to 80 kilograms on their shoulders. This is truly a challenging and hazardous job.

The temperature around Ijen Crater usually reaches about 10°C daily, sometimes even hitting 2°C at dawn. You may witness the incredible blue fire phenomenon around 5:00 AM, followed by an amazing sunrise and the breathtaking scenery of the sulfur lake in the beautiful land of East Java.
